Fashion and Textiles
Gemma Barlow
My work is derived from the world around me, what I see everyday and issues that interest or move me - my work has story and meaning. I have a passion for interpreting the unseen from everyday life into textile designs and creations. My passion for detail, both in thought and vision lead me to create both large and small-scale pieces for interiors.
I use a variety of media from fabric printing and stitch to large scale rug tufting.
The experience of the last three years has been thoroughly enjoyable and invaluable in preparing me for the next step of my journey into my chosen career.

Welcome to my world, the exciting, vibrant and unique life of, me.
From studying at University of Wolverhampton BA (Hons) Fashion Accessories, I have become a one of a kind fashion designer specialising in millinery. Inspired by everyday life and twisting it with my fanatical ideas, result in quirky designs aimed towards young women's fashion. I am a very dynamic and enthusiastic designer, with a high energetic vibe in making my designwork come to life. I am able to design garments and headwear, create prints from my quirky illustrations and style my outfits up for photoshoots.
Studying Fashion Accessories has made me realise I would want to pursue a career in Fashion Visual Merchandising, where I can showcase my quirky ideas for the whole world to see.

I really enjoy being part of fashion course I have gained so many skills while being at University of Wolverhampton, that I feel very positive for my future aspirations of becoming a designer in the fashion industry.
When I work to a planned brief I am reminded that I need to gather as much knowledge that I can from the current trends to future ones, fabric choices and personal inspiration such as nature, film, textures and any thing that catches the eye to bring inspiration to create a well informed collection around. Also producing market and product reports help get an idea of gaps and areas that are doing well in fashion industry. I begin a piece by creating mood and concept boards. Colour pallets and fabric swatches also help me to get a mental image and start designing outfits. Fabric swatches also help me understand texture and depth, before I begin to start pattern cutting and toiling to then produce into garments.
I know a piece is done when I have explored all angles of research, and inspiration. When I have finished a project and I feel that it has gone well, I am filled with a sense of accomplishment that I have created an idea and brought it to life and that other people receive it with a good response.

My personality is quite quirky which comes across in my designs whether it being the main focus or a slight hint. I've recently won some competitions set by design companies, plus I have started my own company designing jewellery. Future aspirations include expanding the Lynsey Luu brand into print for stationery and clothing. Inspiration comes from personal interests such as Monty Python sketches, Peter Jackson films, Terry Prachett books and anything unusual. I like my work to offer an alternative to the norm.
Serena Perks
As a designer i would describe my style as fashion forward, creating a modern, clean but edgy look for women who are not afraid to express themselves through fashion.
I believe fashion is a way to show your personality, enhancing yourself by being an individual and showing the world who you are through what you wear.
The main thing I love about fashion is how it can define you, from the colours you choose to your own personal style, they all combine together to create a style that is unique to you.

Taking inspiration from my family I turn to art and design. It's a desire that runs through me, its part of my make up; to put pencil to paper and to illustrate the world around me. I have an eye for detail and a mind for precision which both lend themselves well to the repeat structures of surface pattern design. Returning to University was a turning point in my life and the last three years have moulded and shaped my skills in readiness for me to enter the design world armed with passion and creativity.

Throughout many projects my inspiration mainly comes from my cultural heritage and many things Islamic. I also intend to look at street culture and take inspriration from graffitti as in the future I would like to go in to streetwear design. My work is mainly a mixture of colours which I intend to use in final prints and I enjoy experimenting on adobe photoshop and creating graphical images. Through out the course my interest has grown in textile prints and producing abstract prints for garments.

After finishing my degree from the University of Wolverhampton, I agreed that among all the creative challenges, I enjoy the process of research and development of initial ideas the most. With time I realised I am most passionate about designing garments for women and succeeding in building a career in fashion has become my ambition. I am a very self motivated person, who thrives to be the best in every subject area. Designing to me is an essential skill to have, as you get to be creative and use your imagination to create something extraordinary. My work is designed mostly on CAD. My work is very modern and I design with trend awareness and aim for a young audience.
