What is F-Secure?

F-Secure is the standard anti-virus software used on PCs at the University.

Download F-Secure

Go to www.wlv.ac.uk/its/downloads to download F-Secure.

This is available for students and members of staff at the University for use on personally owned computers. You will be asked for your IT username and password if installing it on a personally owned device. Alternatively, you can download it from a University computer, save it on a memory stick and install later.

How to install F-Secure Client Security on home computers

These notes accompany the F-Secure download package, available to staff and students free of charge.

Version 9.01 of F-Secure includes anti-virus, firewall and spyware detection For more information, see the F-Secure website. This version is compatible with Windows XP/Vista/Windows 7.

Remove any other anti-virus or firewall software or any previous version of F-Secure

Note: It will cause problems if you have more than one anti-virus package on your PC. If you don't manually remove any other anti-virus software from your PC before you install F-Secure, it may automatically be deleted without any warning.

Install F-Secure

 
  1. Follow the prompts on the Setup Wizard screens to install the software.
  1. Restart your computer if prompted to do so.

You should see the F-Secure logo at the bottom right of your screen. Double clicking on the logo will give you access to F-Secure Settings and Statistics, as on the screen below:

The Internet Shield monitors and filters network traffic, and includes the Firewall. The Internet Shield settings for this version of F-Secure supplied by the University are as follows: (This screen can be found by clicking on the Status Icon above).

The Firewall is set to 'Office'.

For more information about the settings and changing them, select the Help (?) button on this screen.

If you use Internet Explorer, you'll see an extra option on the Tools menu for the IE Shield, where you can change the Browser Control settings which block popups and protect your IE settings against unwanted changes.
