IT Self Help

The aim of this page is to introduce you to using the File Transfer Protocol program used on University computers - WS-FTP.

What is FTP?

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is used to transfer work from one computer to another. It does this by allowing you to transfer work from a host PC to the server to which it is connected. You can then connect to the server from any other computer and retrieve your work.

You can use FTP to transfer files to and from:

Note: Before using FTP you should save your completed work on the PC you are using.

Starting FTP

Logging On to the Server

After starting FTP, the Session Properties window will be displayed:

Follow the instructions for logging on to the personal file store server, the WOLF server or the asp2 webserver, depending on which one you want to connect to.

  1. Logging on to the Personal File Store Server

You can do this to transfer files to and from your personal file store when you are off campus. For more details, see Access your Personal File Store using FTP. If you are using a Windows 2000 or XP PC at the University, the 'My Documents' folder is your personal file store on the server, so you don't need to use FTP to save or retrieve your files when on campus.

  • Click the down arrow next to the Profile Name.
  • Look for a profile called My Documents (UoW), and if it is in the list, select it.
  • If it is not in the list, click the New button, and complete the window as follows, entering homedir.wlv.ac.uk in the Host Name/Address box:

    Session properties

  • Make sure that there is no tick in the 'Anonymous' box.
  • Enter your University IT Account details in the User ID and password fields.
  • Click on the OK button.
  1. Logging on to the WOLF Server

WOLF Administrators should use this method to access a topic's filestore on the WOLF server.

  • Start WS-FTP

  • If the Session Properties window isn't blank, select the New button to clear it.

If you are a member of staff administering a site on www2, you can use this method to access the files on your site.

  • If the Session Properties window isn't blank, select the New button to clear it.

Transferring a File

When you have logged in you will see a screen similar to this one:

FTP Transfer screen

The left hand side of the screen (Local System) shows the files and folders on the computer you are currently using. The right hand side of the screen (Remote Site) shows the files and folders stored on the server.

To transfer a file you must first locate the file.

Once the appropriate file is selected you can transfer it to the server. To do this:

The file you have copied should now appear in the right hand window of the FTP screen. If it does not appear you will need to refresh the screen. To refresh the screen click on the Refresh button  button located on the right hand side of the screen.

To move a file from the remote server to the PC you are currently using, follow the same procedure to log on, select the file you wish to transfer and click on the Left arrow symbol  symbol. The file will then be copied to the directory currently in use.

Other Functions within FTP

Other useful functions can be found on the menu bars at either side of the file listing windows.

FTP Options

You can use the ChgDir command to change to a directory/folder if you know the name of it. You can create new directories/folders on either the local computer or remote server using the MkDir command. You can view files or run executable and delete files from either system.

Once you have finished with FTP click on the Exit button  button to close the program.
