Personal Networks
JANET Roaming Service (JRS)

The JANET Roaming Service allows a guest user to use their own username and password to gain network access at another participating institution, either on guest workstations or wirelessly. The level of network access a visitor has is set by the host institution and may vary from one institution to the next, but most Internet services available though your own ISP should be provided. More information about the JRS service can be found at JANET Roaming.
The JRS is the UK academic part of the international eduroam service which provides an infrastructure for roaming between institutions throughout Europe and some other parts of the world. For more information and details of locations, see the eduroam web site.
If you are from the University of Wolverhampton, you can use JANET Roaming here too (see below).
Home and Visited services
An institution may offer the home service, visited service or both; the University now provides both.
- A home institution is one which provides a service to allow its members to be authenticated at the remote site. In our case this enables our staff or students to use their UoW IT username and password to access the network resources at any other participating institution with visited status.
- A visited institution is one which permits members from other organisations to use its facilities whilst they are on site.
Information for University Staff and Students visiting other institutions
- Before visiting an institution, check whether they participate in the JANET Roaming service. A map of participating institutions throughout the UK is available at JANET Roaming - National Locations.
- Use the interactive map to find the web page for the institution and instructions for accessing their JANET roaming services. These pages will also explain the type and location of access points the type of service they support, and the procedure.
- If you haven't used this computer or mobile device with JANET Roaming before, it is advisable to set it up before you go to the site offering access:
- University owned laptop
The settings required to access the JRS are set automatically using group policy, but you must log in to the University network to get them installed. To check, click Start, then select Settings, Control Panel, Network Connections, Wireless Network Connection. Click the Properties button, then the Wireless Networks tab. If an entry for "eduroam" appears under Preferred Networks, then it is ready for use. If not, contact the IT Service Desk on ext. 2000 (01902-322000).
- University owned laptop
You can easily set up a Windows PC by downloading the Eduroam Setup Tool.
Setting up an iPhone, iPad or Mac to use eduroam
This works on any iPhone or iPad running iOS 4 or higher, and on any Mac running OS/X Lion (10.7) or higher.
- Send a blank email message to "EduroamSetupApple@wlv.ac.uk". It will send you back an email containing an attachment called "Eduroam-signed.mobileconfig", which also contains the setup instructions below.
- Tap (iPhone or iPad) or double-click (Mac) this attachment. This starts the installation process.
- It will ask you to confirm that you want a profile installed.
- During the installation, it will ask for your username and password. You should put "@unv.wlv.ac.uk" after the username, like this: inXXXX@unv.wlv.ac.uk. The password is your standard IT Account password.
You can now join the eduroam network.
- When you visit another institution, you should be able to use any web based University facility that you can use from home, e.g. WOLF, OWA and WebDrive. Please note that the institution you are visiting may place some restrictions on what you can access, so check their website for details of access available.
- Familiarise yourself with the JRS Policy and the Conditions of Use at the institution you are planning to visit.
- Sites which offer network access under JANET Roaming do not make any commitments regarding security. You should treat such a network like any other Internet hotspot, and make sure that you have anti-virus and personal firewall software.
- There's more information and a detailed checklist of what to do before you go on the JANET Roaming website.
- You can use JANET Roaming at the University too - you will get the same facilities as if you connected to "wolfradiolan" (students) or "wlvstaff" (staff). If you are a student, your PC will be checked by Cisco Clean Access as usual, but you won't need to log into Clean Access first.
Information for staff and students visiting from elsewhere
The University provides a Tier 2 wireless service using the SSID "eduroam". Both WPA and WPA2 are available; WEP is not available. The areas where this can be used are listed on the Wireless Hotspot Locations page (see navigation bar to left). Note that it is not available in the student residences. We do not use NAT (address translation) on this service - any address you get will be a public IPv4 one. We block a few outgoing ports:
- TCP 25 (SMTP - but 465 and 587 remote mail submission available)
- TCP 512-518 (UNIX remote access)
- TCP and UDP 135-139 (NetBIOS)
- TCP 593 (RPC over HTTP)
- TCP and UDP 445 (SMB)
- UDP 1434 (MS-SQL)
We do not block incoming ports. Please ensure you have an appropriate firewall.
Acceptable Use Policy and Conditions of Use
Anyone using the JRS must comply with the JRS Policy and with the Conditions of Use in force at the visited institution. Where the policies and regulations differ the most restrictive applies.
Support
All support queries should be directed to the home institution, so if you have problems when you are visiting another institution, please contact the University of Wolverhampton IT Service Desk on 01902 322000.
