Computer given temporary access
Computer needs Security Updates
Computer needs Anti-virus software
Supported versions of Windows
Clean Access does not support Windows NT, Windows 98 or Windows ME and these can't be used on our networks.
Network Authorisation
If you try and access the Internet, and your system hasn’t been registered or authorised to use the University network, you'll see the following screen:
Enter your IT Account username and password. If you don't have an IT Account, you'll need to register for one.
Download Clean Access Agent
You now need to download and install the Clean Access agent software on your computer. This only happens the first time you use the network, or following an upgrade of Clean Access (about once per term).
If your username and password are accepted, on most computers you’ll see the screen below, headed Network Security Notice:
Select Download Clean Access Agent to start the download.
Vista and Windows 7 only: You'll see a screen similar to this one - select Allow to start the download:
You should now get this pop-up to say that the installer is being downloaded:
Select Run to install the agent.
Install CISCO Clean Access Agent
Follow the instructions on the InstallShield Wizard screens to install the software:
Log on to Clean Access Agent
When the software has been installed successfully, wait a few moments until the following screen appears:
Enter your IT Account username and password, then click Log In.
Note: If you check the Remember Me box, your details will be retained until you shutdown your computer, but not (as you might expect) after that.
Your computer will now be checked to see if it meets the University's security requirements. While this is going on, you'll see this box:
When this finishes, you’ll get a message saying either that your computer has successfully logged in to the network, or that you need to fix something. The messages will vary depending on your operating system and the state of your computer.
Computer passes checks and is allowed to access the network
Select OK to remove this screen. You should now be able to access the Internet as normal.
Computer given Temporary Access
If your computer doesn't pass the security checks, you'll see the following screen:
Select Repair to find out what you need to do.
Computer needs Windows Security Patches
You'll see the screen below if your system is missing some required security patches. Select Update to install the required patches.
You'll see a screen like this while the updates are being installed. It shows which updates are being installed.
Then a screen saying you've successfully updated your computer.
Windows XP
If you keep getting asked to install updates, or have problems installing updates, such as getting an empty grey window, try the following:
- Restart your computer
- Do not Login into the Clean Access Agent screen
- Instead, go directly to the Microsoft Windows Update site (www.update.microsoft.com). Open Internet Explorer and type in the address or
- Select the Tools Menu
- Select Windows Update
- Follow the instructions given on Screen by Windows Update
- Choose the Express option when it gives you options to choose between Custom or Express
- You might have to repeat this process several times until you see that there are no updates available.
- When there are no more Windows Updates available, log in to Clean Access.
Note: Add the Windows Update site to your favorites, so you can easily go to the site to update your computer in future.
If your computer isn't set to automatically get the latest updates, select Configure automatic updates, so that your computer regularly gets the required security updates.
If the Clean Access Agent login box doesn't appear, click on the Clean Access icon in the system tray (bottom right of your screen). Log in to do the checks again.
When the updates have been successfully installed and you've logged in to Clean Access again, you'll either be told that your computer has successfully logged in , or that it requires anti-virus or firewall software.
NOTE: Microsoft only allows legal copies of its Windows Operating System to be updated. When you connect to the Update site, your version of Windows will be checked to ensure it is a legal copy. If the check determines that your copy is not legal (it is installed from a copied disk, has been installed on more systems than authorised by its licensing agreement, or is otherwise determined to be invalid), you will not be able to complete Updates. This check and the requirements to meet it are determined and controlled solely by Microsoft. If you do not have a legal copy of Windows you must purchase and install one before you will be granted access to the University Network.
Computer needs Anti-virus software
Next the Clean Access Agent will check whether your computer has the University's AV software installed, F-Secure. If not, you must install it before you can access the Internet, and you’ll see:
Click Go To Link, which will offer you the F-Secure installer. If it asks 'Run' or 'Save', you should choose 'Run'. This will launch the installer. Once it completes, it will ask you to restart your PC.
Now log in to the Clean Access Agent. It will check the system again, and this time the AV requirement should be satisfied.
Computer needs Firewall
Next the Clean Access Agent will check whether your computer has a firewall turned on. If not, you'll see this message:
- If you've installed F-Secure, the firewall is included. If not, you can turn on the Windows Firewall. In XP, go to Start, then Settings, then Control Panel. In Vista and Windows 7, go to Start, then Control Panel, then System and Security. When you turn it on, you may get a User Account Control pop-up asking you to confirm this.
Then click Re-Scan to repeat the checks. Your system should now pass the University's security checks (see above).
