Personal Networks
Network Authorisation using CISCO Clean Access
This page tells you what you need to do to use your own computer, hand-held device or games console on the University's personal networks.
Before your system can connect to the University's wireless network, or the personal wired networks in University Accommodation, it has to pass the University's security checks. This is to protect your computer and the University networks from virus infections and other malicious software.
CISCO Clean Access is the software that handles the network authorisation process, and the first time you try to connect to these networks, you'll be asked to install the Clean Access Agent (CAA). The software then checks that your computer has up-to-date security patches, anti-virus software and firewall. If your computer passes the security checks, it should only take about 10 minutes to set up.
Once you have installed the CAA, your computer will be checked every week, or whenever you restart or switch your computer on and it tries to connect to the personal networks. When you switch your computer on, wait for the CAA login box to appear before you try to connect to the network. The weekly check is done at 6am, so the CAA login box will pop up at this time if you are already using your computer.
The Clean Access Agent only operates when you are connected to these networks; it stays inactive at all other times, so it won't affect your connection to any other wireless networks.
Instructions for connecting the following devices to the personal networks:
- Windows PCs - install the Clean Access Agent and go through the checking process.
- Apple Macs - you need to install the Clean Access Agent, but don't have to go through the checking process.
- Games consoles, smartphones and other handheld devices - there isn't a Clean Access agent for these devices. You can either log in using the Web browser supplied with them, or register the MAC address of the device. Here are instructions for finding the MAC address of the most common games consoles.
- Linux - there isn't a Clean Access agent for Linux, so you'll just see the Network Authorisation screen.
If you are asked to download the Clean Access agent on non-Windows devices, or have any other queries, please contact the IT Service Desk on 01902-322000, internal ext. 2000, or ask staff in a Learning Centre.
