Research Associate on Software Development for Text  Simplification (Temporary 30 months)

This is a temporary post for 30 months

As research associate you will work on an EU-funded project to develop a system that will simplify documents for people with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) with the help of language technology (LT). You will focus on implementation of various components, as well as evaluation of the system. You should have a degree in computer science and a PhD in computational linguistics or equivalent experience. Experience in Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques and programming is required, as well as experience with Machine Learning techniques for language processing. Publications in good journals, experience with grant applications and working with the industry, native or near native proficiency in English are a plus. A solid background in development of software for NLP is required.

Required skills: * PhD or equivalent research experience/output in Computational Linguistics/Natural Language Processing * Experience with machine learning for NLP * Familiarity with multilingual text processing * Experience with at least one of the following programming languages C, C#, Perl, Python or Java * Experience with processing of large data collections * Experience with using existing NLP frameworks/libraries

Desirable skills: * With participation in international projects * Experience in developing assistive language technology and in software personalisation * Experience in NLP areas such as document summarisation, coreference resolution, lexical substitution, word sense disambiguation * Good journal publications * Ability to prepare and deliver documents for EU projects

To ensure all appropriate paperwork and systems are in place to meet organisational and project audit requirements. To supervise monitoring procedures for identified externally funded projects, the aggregation of information and preparation of reports.

Educated to degree level or equivalent qualification in Business or Administration Management you will have a track record as a highly effective Project Officer with advanced IT skills in MS Office including word-processing, spreadsheets and databases. You should have knowledge of European project monitoring procedures and an ability to recognise trends in data and identify and flag inconsistencies and errors as managing budgets and financial reporting will be necessary. You will have effective report writing skills including statistical analysis and experience of monitoring project outcomes. Experience of project management would be advantageous. You will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, be highly motivated, able to undertake a diverse range of duties working independently to meet deadlines.

You should have a strong music background as well as considerable expertise in studio recording, MIDI sequencing, digital/analogue audio production and live sound reinforcement. The ability to teach any aspect of Music or Popular Music would be an advantage.

You should also be thoroughly conversant with current trends and approaches in this rapidly developing subject area as well as teaching experience in Higher Education. With good interpersonal skills, you will be committed to a student-centred approach and be flexible in your approach to the subject.

The School of Sport, Performing Arts and Leisure is a vibrant, dynamic School that has continued to grow since it was formed nearly a decade ago and following the opening of the new £18 million Performance Hub, an exciting new post has arisen to support the School in enabling the facility to maximise its potential.

We are now looking for a highly driven individual to take on the role of Performance Hub Promoter. You should have experience of working within either conferencing or event and venue management, have a background in customer care/service and have a flexible approach to working hours and be prepared to travel.

You will be able to demonstrate the necessary commercial and marketing skills and abilities to promote the facilities within the Performance Hub and support the implementation of new systems and processes to enable the facility to be business ready. You will be required to hold or obtain the Designated Premises Supervisor (licensee) as part of your role.

In the nature of the post it is not expected that applicants will have prior experience of similar work but those with a PhD in an area related to Library and Information Science or Computer Science will be considered, and those with experience of scientometrics or webometrics are particularly encouraged to apply. You will have working knowledge of scholarly uses of the Web and basic statistics, and will be able to apply your existing research skills to this new area. Good communication and team working skills are essential, and a knowledge of disciplinary issues relevant to research in the social sciences or humanities would be an advantage.
